Dear Editor:

My wife and I were babysitting our three-year-old grandson in Whistler on Monday, Dec. 21 when we received the call from a neighbour. We live in Victoria, our house was on fire. Six Saanich fire trucks and crews arrived and we hit the ferry as soon as we could.

We had tremendous support in Victoria, but today (Wednesday, Dec. 23) was the first time we were allowed in. We donned full rebreathers and protective suits and went in to see for the first time that our collection of life’s trappings were gone. The house stands, but there is really nothing left inside.

We headed back on the ferry to come for Christmas to our daughter and son-in-law’s house in Squamish, to spend this special time with grandchildren and family and friends.

We decided to stop at The Beachhouse (Restaurant & Lounge at Dundarave Pier) for dinner as we were tired, hungry and needed a break. Our waitress asked how we were and we told her our little story. Dinner and atmosphere were great, but it was time to head on in the dark rainy night and we asked for the bill.

Brittany Firth, the night manager came to our table with a dessert, and then proceeded to humble us with kindness. She had heard about our loss and said The Beachhouse was giving us dinner for Christmas on the house.

It has been a hard few days, but this kindness should be recognized, and we will endeavour to pay it forward.
