Dear Editor:
I just wanted to wish a happy 75th birthday to Park Royal, which opened Sept. 1, 1950 as the first regional shopping centre to be built in Canada.
The original mall was a single level on the north side of Marine Drive, with 26 stores including a large Woodward’s and F.W. Woolwoorths. There was parking for 700 cars.
Today, there is talk about “densifying” the area around the Marine Drive and Taylor Way intersection. But at the same time, we need to respect the historical aspects of the north mall, which was an innovative, first-of-its kind that we were fortunate to have built in our community.
Happy 75th Park Royal!
