Tony Sperling’s letter offers some excellent suggestions on how we can take action on climate change, and challenges us to “start taking action today.”

There are many things that individuals and communities can do to make a difference, and through its “Cool Neighborhoods” initiative, Cool North Shore, a local non-profit organization, provides support to those who are interested in getting together with neighbours to take simple steps to conserve energy, and have fun doing it.

Easy weatherization steps such as caulking and sealing can achieve energy savings of more than 25 per cent, resulting in lower energy bills, a more comfortable home and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Even greater savings can be realized through retrofits such as window replacements, insulation and high-efficiency furnaces.

In West Vancouver, single-family homes are responsible for over half of GHG emissions; in the District of North Vancouver, buildings produce about 50 per cent of the community’s GHGs. We can all take action to reduce these numbers, and make every neighbourhood a cool neighbourhood.

Cool North Shore
