Dear Editor:

Re: North Van fentanyl dealer avoids jail time, Nov. 5

It is with a heavy heart that I feel compelled to respond to this article. My son, who died in February 2004, was a so-called “recreational” drug user who availed himself of the convenience of dial-a-dope purveyors of misery.

His problem was also our problem: an agonizing one.  His death from an accidental overdose came one night after a couple of months of abstinence. That night our lives changed forever.

The defendant in the case is described as “well adjusted and kind,” in my opinion a total oxymoron considering the charges laid against him. As far as him (supposedly) being unaware he was selling fentanyl but knew of its dangers, one can only suppose that he was pleading ignorance.

I hope the fact that he “feels terrible for what he has done to the community” will be of some solace to ruined families. I also believe the judge had the wool pulled over her eyes.
