Bring back extinct species? (Inquiring Reporter, Jan. 16)
Where people have introduced species to a controlled environment, it has gone well: chickens, cows, bananas, coffee etc.
In the wild, it often has not: Asian pine beetles in North America, raccoons in Europe, rabbits in Australia or mongooses in Hawaii.
If the mammoth comes back, there would be bragging rights for the scientists and countries involved, but if released into the wild, perhaps a problem with poaching.
