LETTER: Don't hijack our roads to put more bus routes

Dear Editor: Public transport is a good thing, but unfettered power is not.

Dear Editor:

Public transport is a good thing, but unfettered power is not. The May 9 article in the North Shore News about dedicated bus lanes, TransLink seeks input on Dundarave to Phibbs express bus service slated for late 2019, has set alarm bells ringing. It is one thing for the bus company to put more buses on a route – economics will determine that, but it is another thing to literally hijack half or a third of a publicly owned road like Marine Drive.

Congestion is a worldwide problem and it will not be solved by adding a fleet of enormous cumbersome articulated vehicles to the mix.

The flippant “maybe we should grab a few on-road parking spaces or stop left-hand turns while we’re at it” clearly shows the biased thinking behind the plan.

They would do well to think back to who paid for the roads with their taxes, fuel levies and contributions to the economy, and to remember that motorists also have rights – and votes.

Does anybody think that shaving a few minutes off the bus ride will be worth the mayhem this will cause?

Maybe its time to clip the wings of the hierarchy at TransLink instead.
