Dear Editor:
Re: Community to gain from proposed changes to Kirkstone Path, March 2 Mailbox.
Thank you for your story on Kirkstone Park.
For my part in this debacle, I would like to offer my apologies to the community, and say that unequivocally we dropped the ball.
Community consultation is absolutely required in good decision making, and although the developer Mosaic, consulted with the community on their project, the District of North Vancouver, in my opinion, did not sufficiently alert the community to potential change on the path to Kirkstone Park.
The Lynn Valley flexible planning framework, the official community plan, and Lynn Valley Town Centre plan, were all part of community consultation over the years, but people need reminders, and refreshing, to truly feel like they know what is taking place in their community. Our job is to make sure that information is current, clear, and comprehensive.
We made a mistake in not alerting through signage at the trailhead this issue, so the community could provide input before council moved ahead, and for that I am deeply sorry. I hope that council will agree to give the community the opportunity to come together at a public meeting to provide their input on this trail, the park and local infrastructure.
Coun. Lisa Muri
District of North Vancouver
