LETTER: Dangerous highway merge needs to be changed

Dear Editor:

Today I almost killed myself and my daughter merging onto the highway from Dollarton Highway leading onto the (Ironworkers Memorial) Second Narrows bridge. This merging lane is dangerously short and there is no indication sign or otherwise to notify the driver. This needs to be changed structurally or put a worded sign up saying Danger: Short Merge Lane Ahead. With all the engineering advances we have today it is ludicrous that the transportation ministry does not correct this, especially when its citizens’ lives are threatened.

Editor’s note: Improvements are coming. There are plans for a new Main Street/Dollarton Highway interchange, to be completed in 2021. The transportation ministry has revised its design plans for the remaining phases of the Highway 1 and Lower Lynn interchanges based on feedback from public info sessions held here last year. See the plans April 17, 5-8 p.m. at Holiday Inn & Suites on Old Lillooet Road. Or click here to go to the ministry's web page.
