Dear Editor:
Re: Harry Jerome rec centre to stay open during rebuild.
It is gratifying and fair to see North Shore taxpayers getting their leisure activity back on course.
Hockey, swimmers, lacrosse and exercise groups will be in the old HJ until December 2025. Whether it was resident pressure or a commercial screw-up, they are now able to enjoy the physical activity they have had for the last 57 years in a municipal building.
My physical and social activity – curling – is still not available on the North Shore. We, I guess 300, curlers drive the bridge weekly to play in Vancouver and New Westminster curling rinks. In Vancouver, we are in a municipal building run by a curling association. New Westminster’s curling rink is on municipal property run by the Royal City Curling Club.
Under Curl BC direction, there are 85 rinks in British Columbia and a few that are not associated with Curl BC. Curling is not a sport set up for elite players but covers the entire population, from junior to senior levels. It is a shame that the recreation commission on the North Shore is unable and unwilling to build a curling rink into any of their recreation facilities.
