Letter: COVID risks deserve our continued care, even on West Vancouver's Seawalk

Remember to keep your distance
West Van and Bridge
A portion of the Seawalk in Dundarave.

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to the young woman running with her two friends on the West Vancouver Seawalk the morning of Sunday, May 9.

They were running three abreast, and when they came close to my husband and I, my husband took exception to how close they were to us. We had stepped aside to let them go by, and no effort was made on their part to pass us at a safe distance as designated by signage all the way along the Seawalk. One of the women chose to respond to my husband’s concern, and threw a comment back over her shoulder to the effect that she was tired of being told what to do.

My father reached his 101st birthday in good health. I wonder what he would think if I told him of someone who was tired of being told what to do despite the fact we are still dealing with a world pandemic -- a woman who is more concerned with her own self-interest than the general interest of others.

The only problem is, I won’t be able to tell him, as he died of COVID five days after his birthday. If this woman were to see this letter, I hope rather than choosing to do as she pleases despite continuing health safety concerns, she may give a little more thought to what COVID means to the people she is encountering on a daily basis.
