Dear Editor:
On Feb. 11 of this year, my mom was walking along St. Andrews Avenue in North Vancouver (near 15th Street), when she fell and smashed her face on the pavement, breaking her nose and bleeding excessively.
My mom was 76 years old and was unable to get herself up. She was scared and in pain. And two kind strangers came to her side. They were a couple, I believe.
The man held her head, my mom later told us, while both he and the woman he was with called an ambulance for her. My mom was taken to emergency and eventually, we, her children, were notified.
At the hospital, we were told she would be OK. But a chain of events, over the course of 10 days in the hospital, tragically led to my mom passing away. We were all shocked — her family, her doctors and I still remember the fear and shock in my mom’s face when she realized that things were more serious than she thought.
I miss my mom so much, and even though more than a month has gone by, I still can’t believe that all of this happened. But I am so grateful for the two people who helped her get to the hospital.
It allowed me to spend those last few days with my mom and be by her bedside until her last breath. All of our family thank you for that.
I don’t know who you are, but I know that my mom is eternally grateful for your kindness and the time you took to take care of her. I am hoping you read this article and make yourself known, as I would like to thank you in person, on behalf of my mom. “I don’t know who those people were,” she kept saying in the hospital.
But I know she would want me to find out and let you know that your act of kindness made a huge difference in so many of our lives.
