Dear Editor:

Re: More Balance Needed in Pipeline Reporting, April 14 Mailbox.

I agree with letter-writer Mr. Jack Marr’s observations. Thankfully, today Mr. Trudeau and his government (better late than never) seem to be taking the steps to ensure this necessary pipeline is built. The pipeline will have significant economic benefits for all of Canada and presents a low and acceptable risk. There are oil tankers today going out of Vancouver (since the 1950s with zero accidents) and there are many tankers sailing off our coast from Alaska. The federal government investment in oil spill recovery and tanker safety of $1.5 billion will be an enormous improvement on what we have today. In addition, despite the media slant, many First Nations actually are supportive of the pipeline and rightly expect to get economic benefits for their people.

In Canada we need to get projects of national interest built and remember the previous B.C. government supported the project. If we can’t, Canada is just a collection of self-interested and bickering provinces and we will all be poorer.
