Letter: Build North Van a 50-m pool before pitching a park over the highway

Pipe-dream park plan shows that priorities are mixed up

North Vancouver should revamp the plans for the Harry Jerome rec centre to include a 50-metre pool before pitching any plans to build a nearby park over the highway, this letter writer says.

Dear Editor,

I saw the news story about Mayor Linda Buchanan’s idea of building a park over the highway.

Really! I am thinking, how much money would be needed for the steel, concrete, man hours of labour for covering that area of the highway? Which, in my opinion, would be a very large area! And also, what would be the cost of the maintenance of the park later?

There are already many parks in the city and district. The last time I was in a park I saw how many people were making use of the space for the time of day or season it can be available. There could be many more people who would benefit from the space of another 25 metres of pool length for the new Harry Jerome rec centre for 15 hours a day.

Having lived in North Vancouver for 62 of my 65 years, I very much think that we should consider again the need to have a 50 meter pool for a rec center that will serve the community for the next 50-plus years.
