Dear Editor:

I agree with Ted Shandro’s Nov. 11 letter regarding daylight saving time.

I have been asking this same question for years. We do not need more darkness in our lives, we need more light. I also believe there would be fewer traffic accidents too because it is now dark at 3 p.m. and often raining and visibility is very poor.

There have been conflicting stories (about) why we still change the clocks. One story is because of the farmers needing more early light in the mornings, another was because of the war. These times are long past. I also think if our American friends to the south decide to not change their clocks in the fall, that we would follow suit. Some areas of Canada do not make the switch to daylight saving, including the province of Saskatchewan, and manage just fine.

Previously, Canada had observed daylight saving from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October. After legislation was passed in 2006, daylight saving now begins three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and ends on the first Sunday in November. So they obviously felt we need more light too.

What we need to do now is set up a website and get as many signatures as possible to protest the time change in the fall. Then perhaps our new prime minister may consider this as he seems open to new and changing times and “because it’s 2015.”
