Dear Editor:
It irks me to read yet another letter in the North Shore News bemoaning a supposedly irresponsible cyclist upsetting an apparently angelic motorist. I suspect that a much lower percentage of cyclists disobey the Motor Vehicle Act than do motorists for the simple fact that a mistake for a cyclist could easily be deadly.
We know that huge numbers of motorists have no problem using cellphones while driving despite it being both illegal and extremely dangerous.
Excessive speeds and a lack of respect for cyclists and pedestrians further endanger the non-driving public. We should also remember that the Motor Vehicle Act is biased towards motorists and perhaps it should be revised to enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians even if the needed changes may inconvenience motorists. Better yet, let’s all relax and slow down a little, and the more of us who walk and ride, the better everybody’s commute.
