Letter: Lack of resident parking in new building could lead to congested streets

'Will tenants be required to provide proof that they don’t have a driver’s license or own a car before moving in?'

Integra Architecture's designs for 133 East Fourth St. The project, approved by City of North Vancouver council July 12, has no resident parking.

Dear Editor:

According to an article in the July 14 edition of the North Shore News (CNV approves rental building with no resident parking), City of North Vancouver Councillor Tony Valente understands people’s reservations about a building with no parking, but he is “fairly sure that we can find 23 renters who don’t have driver’s licenses”.

Will tenants be required to provide proof that they don’t have a driver’s license or own a car before moving in?  Will their lease agreement include an eviction clause should their driving or car ownership status change? Or does Councillor Valente expect people to simply have faith and hope for the best?

Without strict parking controls in place – around this building and others – the public ends up subsidizing parking for tenants without a designated parking spot.  This is simply unfair.  The developer walks away and the neighbours have to put up with congested streets.
