Dear Editor:

Re: Mighty Mouse Has Mighty Heart: Swimming Legend Talks Life in the Pool Lane, Aug. 27 Sunday Focus.

First of all, thank-you to the North Shore News editors and to reporter Ben Bengtson for the wonderful feature.

From my vantage point as a former Olympic swimmer, the current debate over building a 25-metre- versus a 50-metre pool flows much deeper than what initially meets the eye on the surface.

Of course, the most obvious advantage of having a 50-metre Olympic-sized facility will go to the thousands of people who will enjoy its spacious expanse but also the community as a whole will feel its beneficial ripples.

A fully sanctioned long-course venue will inevitably elevate the North Shore’s opportunities to seek and host provincial, national and international sporting events. Having a permanent first-class facility here will also attract high-calibre athletes and coaches from all points, inspiring and mentoring a whole new generation of achievers. Therefore, this is a golden opportunity to courageously embrace a future for our community, celebrating and supporting all its possibilities rather than to potentially limit it by focusing on an arbitrary figure posted on a bottom line.

Personally, you can count me in on the bright vision ahead of us!
