Lawyer not so 'downtown'

Dear Editor:

I have always enjoyed reading Trevor Lautens' articles in the North Shore News; I think it is the swath of the rapier that makes me chuckle or maybe it is something about "hoisting" and "petarding." But the Nov. 11 piece made me wince when I read his description of Craig Cameron as "too sleek, too downtown by half for my tastes" and so on.

Mr. Cameron is a neighbour of mine whom I first got to meet when he moved across the street from me here in Ambleside, just above the municipal hall. My sense of the man is that he is not slick either in appearance or manner, quite the reverse in fact. He is not "downtown" either in my view. A lawyer yes, but a public servant with the Department of Justice working, I gather, in some way on First Nations files and the Bountiful case. I have found him to be literate. He is young and energetic and thoughtful. In my sense he has good judgement and acts on a basis of fact and the public interest.

I am 72 years old and of course have already voted for him. It is a pity that Mr. Lautens has not had the opportunity to really get to know Mr. Cameron. But unfortunately the damage is done and I hope that publishing this letter in your paper may help heal one of Mr. Lautens' rapier thrusts.
