HST ads do not help one understand referendum

Dear Editor:

I had a good laugh this morning reading in your paper (June 29, page 34) the provincial government's ad on the HST referendum: "Before you vote, understand the referendum question."

You certainly don't "understand" the HST referendum question after reading this silly piece of dribble.

The ad goes on to state: "To lower the HST from 12 per cent to 10 per cent, vote NO. To bring back the GST and PST at 12 per cent, vote YES."

Nowhere in this ad does it say lowering the HST from 12 per cent to 10 per cent is a vague political promise. You don't need political experts or news talking heads to tell you which way this is going to go.

The provincial government threw a fastball and successfully passed the HST. Tax revenue has increased.

My prediction? If the referendum results say keep the HST, it's business as usual. If the referendum brings back the GST/PST, all the products and services currently subject to HST will then be subject to GST/HST.

It's a win/win for Victoria!
