EDITORIAL: It’s not you, it’s them

In the last edition prior to any election – federal, provincial or municipal, we always publish an editorial encouraging you to get out and exercise your right to vote on election day.

In the last edition prior to any election – federal, provincial or municipal, we always publish an editorial encouraging you to get out and exercise your right to vote on election day.

But if you’re reading Page 8 of your local newspaper, chances are you’re already the type who doesn’t miss an election. It’s the other 45 per cent, or so, who can’t seem to bumble their way into a ballot booth that we worry about.

If everyone grabbed one person who they know isn’t planning to vote and dragged them – by the ear if necessary – to a polling station, it would have a seismic impact on politics.

As it stands right now, the parties scheme and strategize on how to win over the people they know will show up, giving them licence to ignore and further disenfranchise the demographics they feel aren’t worth the effort.

Some may argue that voting ignorant of the issues and parties is worse than not voting at all. But it’s not too late to get up to speed. In print, we’ve published untold thousands of words covering the major issues in this election cycle in these recent weeks.

At nsnews.com, we’ve created a separate tab just for our election coverage with more than 40 news stories and opinion pieces.

The election results won’t be in until after our press time on Tuesday, but we’ll be out reporting the local results online just as soon as we have them.

Lastly, we close this final pre-election editorial with a conscience at rest, knowing that no matter who North Shore voters choose to represent them on Tuesday, they will have absolutely made the right choice.
