Drop-off green waste fee discourages recycling

Dear Editor:

Friday the 13th, and I just got dinged six bucks at the recycle yard for a chopped up bush. I had trimmed a small bush and rather than chop it into small enough pieces to get into a paper econo-bag, I spread a large drop sheet and bundled it up and put it in the trunk of my small car.

I was not given the usual numbered card and did not realize there would be a charge. Surprise!

It would be more reasonable to have a no-charge maximum of perhaps 50 kilograms. Pickups and one-ton-stake gardener's trucks would still have to pay. This type of charge for small amounts of garden refuge does not encourage recycling.
