Drivers should peddle bikes, not fees

Dear Editor:

I had to chuckle about letter writer Gerry Wolff's statement "Why we as motorists are penalized to pay for this SkyTrain expansion is beyond my comprehension; we never use the transit system and if we were to, we'd buy a ticket" (Transit Cash Crunch Solved: Bill Cyclists, Aug. 5, North Shore News).

So if everybody simply stopped using transit and just jolly well drove everywhere, problem solved?

He carries on: "In many cases, bikers are inconsiderate and fail to obey traffic rules. They should be required to take a driving test, be issued a permit and pay a licensing fee, just as we motorists are required to do."

So non-transit, ticket-buying cyclists would then also have a license to be inconsiderate and disobedient?

Seriously, every cyclist reduces road congestion and pollution. Every cyclist saves mega public health care dollars through fitness. Every cyclist treads lightly on our costly roads, causing no potholes.

Our sleepy little North Shore is growing up fast, and gridlockreducing cyclists should be thanked and encouraged.

Gerry, come join all of us, old and young; peddle back the hands of time and recover your inner happy.

Yours in cycling soon, I hope.
