Drivers need to slow down for pedestrians to stay safe

North Vancouver - Dear Editor: This afternoon, around 3:30 p.m. while waiting to cross at a clearly marked crosswalk on Jones at 21st Street, in front of Carson Graham secondary, I was frustrated that four cars, including a Capilano Driving School car, did not slow down or stop to allow me to cross the street. I was wearing a light tan rain coat and was clearly visible. When I got home, I called the driving school and explained what happened. I was told that one of their cars was in the area at that time and that it was on loan to an ICBC instructor conducting a driving test! I was also told that they have received complaintsabout driving students not stopping at crosswalks. The company representative did her best to reassure me that those students would not receive a good mark on their exams. However, I sensed that the person I spoke with didn't fully understand my complaint and believed their company didn't share any responsibility for those borrowing their cars for tests. Now, I'm wondering who is liable in the event of an accident caused by a student taking a driving class or test?Countless times, I've seen a variety of drivers, including parents, City of North Vancouver vehicles and other marked company cars not slow down in school zones or stop for students and staff at or inside the marked crosswalks before and after school. How do we bring more attention to this important issue? This is the time of year where there is a notable increase of incidents involving pedestrians getting hit by cars.Val JacoberNorth Vancouver
