Dear Editor:

Regarding Sgt. Peter DeVries June 6 column, It's not the Tours de France out There, regarding the operation of bicycles, I would suggest that the information provided by the officer is useful, but definitely incomplete. The B.C. Motor Vehicle Act governs the use of cycles (any number of wheels) on public roads. Part 3, section 183 (1) states: "In addition to the duties imposed by this section a person operating a cycle on a highway has the same rights and duties as the driver of a vehicle."

Obviously many cyclists are quite unaware of this requirement, particularly the word "duties." What it means is that all the rules of the road a driver learns are also applicable to bicycle operators.

Perhaps Sgt. DeVries might issue a few traffic tickets to the offending cyclists.
