Dear Editor:
A recent edition of Ask a Cop by Sgt. Peter DeVries (Time to Choose a Name for Your Buoy, June 20, North Shore News) was short on info when speaking about rules that apply when fishing for crab along the North Shore.
He didn't mention that one needs a valid Tidal Water Sport Fishing Licence, that retention of females is illegal, that Dungeness crabs must measure 165 millimetres across the back and red rock crabs 115 mm if they are to be kept, and that there is a possession limit of four on this part of the coast. There is also no crabbing allowed between the inlet's bridges, and spearing - which DeVries mentioned - is prohibited, as you can't release them alive if necessary.
The licence is annual, starting April 1.
