City mega project needs mega opposition

Dear Editor:

At the May 28 city council meeting, the North Van City Voices delegation presented concerns regarding the process being used to review the Official Community Plan.

While council seemed to be receptive to concerns about the distinctly pro-development tone of the process so far, just a few minutes later, they voted 5-2 in favour of allowing the mega Harbourside proposal - slated for lands south of the Northshore Auto Mall - to proceed immediately to public hearing June 25, thereby excluding it from the OCP review.

On that date, Concert Properties intends to apply for an amendment to the OCP to add residential to the current commercial/light industrial zoning at the site, which will pave the way for their application to build 800 residential units. Unless there is an outcry from the public, council will vote in favour of the amendment to allow this development to proceed.

A number of seven-to nine-floor towers will be built along the last undeveloped waterfront in the city, and an estimated 2,000 more people and their vehicles will be brought into that area.

If you are afraid that this cavalier attitude towards amendments to the OCP may impact your own neighborhood, please attend the public hearing at City Hall Monday, June 25 to speak out and register your opinion. If you cannot attend, please contact council members through the city clerk to express your concerns: [email protected].
