Build a true Harbourside landmark

Dear Editor:

The Harbourside project presents a unique opportunity to create a dramatic and lasting landmark for all of greater Vancouver. A structure built to replicate a grand old tall ship would provide a landmark unlike anything elsewhere in the world.

It would have to be several times larger than an actual tall ship, large enough so that it would be prominently visible across the inlet. The tall ship would represent a more traditional alternative to the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, whose size it would approximate but with taller "sails."

Yes, developers may baulk at the added complexity and costs of such a structure, but they are being granted access to an amazing site directly across from Vancouver's downtown. Besides, if the developer creates a significant property they should have no difficulty commanding a premium price for the apartments.

Now is the opportunity to be creative, think large and provide a landmark that we can all be proud of, rather than waste this location with the usual rectangular highrise.
