Bikes on sidewalks a hazard for pedestrians

As a resident living near Lonsdale, I am finding it very difficult to feel safe just walking down the street. More and more people of all ages are riding their bikes on the sidewalk, which is illegal in B.C.

In many cities in Europe bikes share the streets with pedestrians, but the sidewalks are divided with marked lanes for wheeled vehicles and the other side marked for pedestrians. Street bike riding etiquette is understood, expected and practised.

Our local bike riders are a hazard to walkers as they silently whiz up behind and around you. It is the same with the electric scooter riders. Our local riders do not even alert you with a bell or calling out "coming up behind."

If we want people to get out of their cars and we are trying to create live-work neighborhoods, we need to make the streets safer for pedestrians and get those bikes off the city streets.
