A lot of you have green thumbs, it turns out.

It's no secret that the North Shore is brimming with passionate home gardeners, but what's less obvious is how many of you grow produce that ends up on the plate.

According to a recent poll, 44 per cent of local North Shore News readers said they grow some of their own food. Meanwhile, around 39 per cent said they don't grow their own food because they don't have the space (which suggests at least some of those would grow if they had more room). Around 17 per cent said they didn't have the time.

One reader rightly pointed out that this poll should have included the option, "No. I don't have the desire." Not everyone cares to cultivate, and that's OK.

For those looking to grow their own food, another reader said to contact St. Clement's Anglican Church in Lynn Valley, which has a community garden with a few accessible garden boxes becoming available. The church also has a waiting list for more boxes as they're built.

The North Shore News polled 2,556 readers and asked the question: Do you grow any of your own food?

The poll ran from June 17 to Aug. 16, 2023. Of the 2,556 votes, we can determine that 785 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes 44.08 % local, 47.34 % total
No. I don't have the time 17.07 % local, 16.16 % total
No. I don't have the space 38.85 % local, 36.50 % total

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers that are located on the North Shore. The margin of error, which measures sample variability, is +/- 1.93%, 19 times out of 20.
