Dear Editor:

It is a great pity that Mayor Michael Smith and some members of council have forgotten the lesson they said they had heard and understood in March 2011, when more than 500 people at a public meeting strenuously voiced their opposition to the proposed Safeway tower in Ambleside.

The Fresh Street Market that has replaced the proposed tower admirably conforms to the community plan and is a great asset and example of innovative design.

I would hope the lesson of the day for the redevelopment of the 13th Street site would be that if the mayor and council listen to the wishes of the community at large, the revitalization of Ambleside will not only conform with the community plan, but will be innovative and harmonious in design.

For the record: All sites in this community are special.
