A great man who loved a great country

Dear Editor: Watching Jack Layton's funeral with millions of Canadians, emotions run strong.

Dear Editor:

Watching Jack Layton's funeral with millions of Canadians, emotions run strong. How can we properly honour this man who touched so many so deeply?

His letter to all of us is a testament to a deeply compassionate life and a commitment to making this great country an even greater one of "equality, justice and opportunity."

The greatness of our country is not only in its natural riches, but also in the richness of our human wealth. It is the legacy of people like Jack Layton, who live his life with love and joy, optimism and dedication to his fellow Canadians. The pursuit of a more just, more compassionate society finds a home in our hearts; it is the essence of the hopes most of us have for this country.

Watching the violent events in the Middle East and other parts of the world, we feel so blessed to be in Canada, not because it is the "best place on earth," but because there are excellent, dedicated people who love it enough to fight to make it even better.

What country marks the passing of a politician with such genuine heartfelt sorrow and love? Which politician leaves a legacy so unanimously celebrated?

Thank you, Jack, for a life so well lived. May we live up to your example.
