A call for science outside summer

Dear Editor: I was glad to see the story "Let's Talk Science" in the Aug. 12 issue of the North Shore News.

Dear Editor:

I was glad to see the story "Let's Talk Science" in the Aug. 12 issue of the North Shore News.

My grandson loves science, and over the years he has very much enjoyed the science day camps put on by High Touch High Tech in the summers at Capilano University and Mulgrave school. As he would like to follow up this interest during the school year, I searched for some sort of ongoing extracurricular science club, course or program on the North Shore, but my net came up empty. Apparently, there are occasional very short-term programs for certain ages at some schools, but I found nothing for a child who would benefit from the ongoing stimulation of a regular extracurricular science program. The recreation centres have all kinds of courses in athletics and arts, but nothing for kids whose major interest is science.

I am thinking of trying to organize a science club for kids entering Grades 6 and 7. If we get together 10 kids, it can be done quite economically, and High Touch High Tech can provide the facilitator. Their program for this age group sounds fantastic.

If anyone knows of an extracurricular science program for this age group on the North Shore, or if you are interested in having your child join such a group, please contact me at [email protected].
