HALIFAX — Firefighters are battling a blaze that's broken out in woodlands on the western edge of Halifax.

The Halifax fire department says crews are on the scene near the Susies Lake area, not far from the Bayers Lake business park.

Local authorities say a Nova Scotia Health outpatient clinic in the area is being evacuated due to smoke billowing from a nearby forest, while people in a commercial building on Dugger McNeil Drive have also been ordered to leave.

The Department of Natural Resources says the Susies Lake fire is now estimated between six and 10 hectares in size.

It says there are two firefighting helicopters at the scene and small air tanker planes from New Brunswick have dropped fire retardant and are returning home.

The department says those planes will be replaced by two other aircraft that will drop water, while another helicopter is expected to arrive.

It said in an earlier post to social media that eight Department of Natural Resources crew members were in Bayers Lake working alongside 30 firefighters from Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency.

The department is asking people not to operate drones in the wildfire area as it is illegal and may result in a $25,000 fine under the Forests Act.
