A North Vancouver teen is in serious but stable condition after being hit by a driver on Mountain Highway.
Police say the 18-year-old was riding his bicycle south on Mountain just after 12:15 p.m. Sunday when the northbound driver of a black Nissan turning left onto East 16th Street pulled in front of him.
The victim hit the passenger side door of the car and “went flying,” according to North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Cpl. Richard De Jong.
The teen received serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his head and shoulder in the crash. As of Monday, the victim was still in hospital. The road bike was also badly damaged.
The victim had the right of way at the time of the crash, De Jong said. The driver, a 26-year-old Langley man, told investigators he did not see the victim.
“Whether he couldn’t or didn’t, that’s part of the investigation. Suffice to say, he did not yield to the oncoming cyclist,” De Jong said. “They haven’t charged the driver yet but charges are pending.”
There were several witnesses to the collision who have made statements to police, De Jong said.
“It speaks to driver attention, driver error and not paying attention at an intersection. Expect pedestrians and bicycles or cars, when you’re making a left-hand turn, to still be coming across that intersection,” he said. “Unfortunately somebody was injured because somebody didn’t pay attention.”
