Halloween season is back with a bang, prompting local public safety officials to remind revellers of the rules around pyrotechnics.

Fireworks of any kind are banned in the City of North Vancouver, and anyone caught with them could face up to a $500 fine.

The District of North Vancouver allows fireworks under certain conditions: they can only be set off on Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and only on private property with a permit obtained from a fireworks vendor or the district. Anyone purchasing or discharging fireworks must be at least 18 years old.

In West Vancouver, fireworks can only be set off on Oct. 27 and Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a $5 permit that can be purchased at Fire Station No. 1 (except this weekend). Fireworks can be discharged only on private property by someone over the age of 18, with the written consent of the property owner, and are illegal to use on any highway, street, park, playground, school grounds or any other public place in West Van.

Firecrackers are banned across the North Shore, with fines ranging from $200 to $500 in North Vancouver district and city respectively.

Police are also asking motorists to pay extra attention for trick-or-treaters on the streets this coming Halloween evening.
