A retired West Vancouver police officer is running for mayor in the City of Vancouver. Fred Harding, 53, who worked with the West Vancouver Police Department for almost two decades, recently announced he will run for mayor under the Vancouver First party banner.

Harding, who lives in Vancouver, left the West Vancouver police two years ago to focus on running his business, Harding Global Consultants, described as “looking to bridge the business gap between North America and Asia.”

In a promotional video, Harding spoke about wanting to “eliminate unfair taxes,” get the homeless “from welfare to work,” and providing free transit for those 18 and under.

Vancouver First has been described as a “centre right” party, one of several fielding candidates this municipal election.

Hereditary chief and Squamish Nation Councillor Ian Campbell withdrew from the Vancouver mayor’s race Monday.

Current City of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is not seeking re-election.
