The final outbreak of COVID-19 at a North Shore seniors' home has been declared over.

The province announced Friday afternoon that the outbreak of the virus at North Vancouver’s Berkley Care Centre was deemed over June 5.

That means there are no longer any care homes or health care facilities where outbreaks are active on the North Shore.

After COVID-19 was first detected in North Shore care homes at the beginning of March, 28 elderly residents died of the virus in three separate North Vancouver seniors' homes.

The outbreak started at the Berkley Care Centre March 30.

Berkley had 12 elderly residents and 13 staff test positive during its outbreak, according to the Ministry of Health. Five residents died, including a long-married couple who died within 37 hours of each other.

Just a few days ago, an outbreak of the virus at Amica’s Edgemont retirement home – where three people died - was also declared over, on June 1.

Nine residents and 10 staff at that care home eventually tested positive.

Other North Shore care homes given the all clear after 28 days without any new cases include Evergreen House, Hollyburn House and Inglewood Care Centre.

The North Shore’s deadliest care home outbreak, at Lynn Valley Care Centre – which claimed the lives of 20 elderly residents – was declared over at the beginning of May, after a two-month battle with the virus.

An outbreak at North Vancouver’s Lions Gate Hospital – which killed nine of the 16 patients who caught the virus – was also declared over May 22.
