District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton will not seek re-election this October, the mayor said Monday.

While his time in the mayor’s chair was an “honour,” Walton decided it was time to step back from district politics following the recent approval of Maplewood town centre plan.

“We finally have in place the last building block anticipated in our 2011 Official Community Plan. This is a logical time to step aside,” he stated in a release.

Located between Dollarton Highway and Mt. Seymour Parkway, the Maplewood plan is slated to bring 1,500 condo and townhouse units alongside light industrial development and a tech district in the area east of Maplewood Farm and west of Windridge Park.

Walton served as chairman of TransLink’s Mayors Council between 2009 and 2014 and was elected vice-chairman in 2017.

Walton and City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto have both opted to step down. However, Walton promised to be hard at work until the new mayor is sworn in at 7 p.m., Monday Nov. 4.

More to come . . .
