ZURICH — Canada’s Sarah Mitton won the women’s shot put at the Diamond League final on Wednesday, capturing her second straight title after also taking gold last year in Brussels.
The Brooklyn, N.S., native fell just a centimetre short of her personal best with a top throw of 20.67 metres.
Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands (20.26) and Chase Jackson of the United States (20.08) placed second and third, respectively.
Mitton owns the third-furthest throw of the season (20.68) behind Jackson (20.95) and Schilder (20.69).
It's the seventh time that the 29-year-old Mitton has thrown 20-plus metres in 2025, including the indoor season.
Mitton said the results are starting to build toward something bigger.
"I'm really excited for the next jump. I've been super consistent. So I feel like that's when it starts to come," Mitton said after her gold-medal throw. "In the lead-up for Tokyo, I'm starting to really get into my technique. So I'm starting to see some bigger throws and training and it translated tonight which was super exciting."
The reigning outdoor world silver medallist and two-time indoor world champion is currently ranked second in the world in the event, with the upcoming world championships taking place in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21.
