Snowboarders showcase best moves on Mt. Seymour

Fans of style, expression and big-air got to reap the benefits of the Lower Mainland’s cooler weather heading into spring last Saturday at a snowboard competition on Mount Seymour.

The Vans Hi-Standard Series, an all-ages international snowboard contest that invites riders to showcase their best moves, is in the midst of a worldwide tour across Canada, France, Korea, Switzerland and the U.S.

North Vancouver’s Mount Seymour was the tenth stop on that tour.

Unseasonably high winds, heavy rain and snow led to a challenging and at times unpredictable series of competitions and events.

But heavy weather didn’t deter riders from giving it their all.

Contestants were encouraged to perform snowboarding moves as stylistically and expressively as possible in an open format. Riders were primarily judged on their individual style alone, not their grandiosity – no spins over 720 degrees were permitted.

Multiple big air-style jam sessions were complemented by a rail trick contest. Two jump sessions occurred in the morning, but bad weather closed a second round later in the day.

Up-and-coming B.C. snowboarder Jasper Fast was crowned MVP for the competition.

Fast will join the other MVPs from the series’ previous stops for the finals at the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski and snowboard resort in California on March 18.
