A driver stopped by West Vancouver police Monday night for speeding and having no insurance has a lot more to answer for after officers discovered a loaded handgun and bullet-proof body armour inside his vehicle.
Police originally pulled over the driver of the 2003 grey Toyota Celica on Highway 1 for speeding as part of a routine traffic stop around 11 p.m. Monday night, said Const. Lisa Schmidtke, spokeswoman for the West Vancouver police.
The 26 year-old Ashcroft man also had no insurance.
Schmidtke said when officers on the scene proceeded to have the car towed, the driver became confrontational.
He was subsequently arrested for obstructing a police officer.
Police searched the car and found the loaded handgun, four-inch hunting knife and black bulletproof body armour vest inside.
Shane Takeshi Gyoba faces several weapons charges including careless use of a firearm, contravention of storage regulations, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition and obstruction of a police officer.
He is scheduled to appear in North Vancouver provincial court for a bail hearing Oct. 1.
