Two people are in hospital and police are investigating after a driver struck a pedestrian on a Central Lonsdale sidewalk Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. The victim was next to the bus shelter on the 2100 block of Lonsdale Avenue, across from London Drugs, when the driver of a northbound white sedan veered across two lanes of traffic, hopped the curb, hit the woman and smashed into a tree, according to police.

“The woman was taken to Lions Gate with non-life threatening injuries,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital too just to determine why he went off the road. … Nothing is determined at this point.”

Police closed Lonsdale for nearly an hour while they investigated and had the vehicle towed. The RCMP have taken witness statements from a number of people who were nearby, De Jong said.
