Wisps of smoke spotted on Squamish Valley fire

Authorities hope the upcoming rain this weekend will finish it off

Burned trees pose a danger in the Upper Squamish Valley, says the BC Wildfire Service.

The Upper Squamish Valley fire trudges on.

A few wisps of smoke were spotted Friday on the site of the Magee Road fire, leading firefighters to suspect some patches may be burning underground, says the BC Wildfire Service.

Authorities aren’t willing to call it out, and are still classifying it as under control, said information officer Donna MacPherson.

MacPherson said that the service is still keeping an eye on the site.

With rain expected this weekend and early into next week, there’s a chance that the leftovers of the fire will be taken care of by Mother Nature, she said.

However, crews are planning to do another thermal scan next week to make sure there aren’t any remaining hot spots after the rain has fallen.

In the meantime, while there are no more restrictions for the area, MacPherson noted the area could still be dangerous, as there are many fire-damaged trees that could fall at any time.

The Magee Road fire has been burning for about half a month now, having started on April 15 and burned down three houses, as well as sheds and other structures.
