City of North Vancouver

With an eye to bolstering public health, council will consider a ban on advertising for vaping products on all city property, including bus shelters and bus stops.

After voting to ban smoking in all parks, plazas and trails last year, city council is making some tweaks to the bylaw before it becomes enforceable, including raising the fines for smoking in a prohibited area from $70 to $230.

And the city will listen to the public’s input before making a decision on a proposal that would give the owner of the 1911 Mount Crown Block at 109-115 East First St. permission to convert two storage spaces fronting LoLo Lane into commercial spaces in exchange for restoring the building’s facade and giving it permanent heritage protection.

District of North Vancouver

DNV council has packed four public meetings into two days on Monday and Tuesday. At 5 p.m. Monday, council will meet as a committee with only one item on the agenda – 2020 budget deliberations.

At the regular council meeting at 7 p.m., council is expected to tweak their bylaws to formally allow for ride-hailing services to operate in the district.

District staff are asking to remove three properties from the community’s register of significant heritage buildings (either because they’ve been demolished or altered to the point of losing their historical value).

And, council will again discuss an idea from Coun. Jim Hanson that would require council members to voluntarily disclose any campaign contributions they received from developers – or people associated with the developer - when one of their proposals comes up, and ask those councillors to recuse themselves.

On Tuesday at 5 p.m., council members are back in the committee room for an update on their childcare strategy, which has been in development since January 2019.

And at 7 p.m., the party moves into the council chamber where there will be the first public hearing for a cannabis shop in the district – a Muse Cannabis Store in the Dollarton Plaza at 385 North Dollarton Hwy.

District of West Vancouver

West Van council doesn’t have another regular meeting until March 9. They have also scheduled a public hearing on a proposal to give permanent heritage protection to Ron Thom’s Forrest-Baker House for March 10.
