A 45-year-old West Vancouver man was handed a violation ticket by conservation officers last Sunday after being seen driving through Whistler with two dead bears strapped to the roof of his van.

Police stopped the driver just south of Whistler on Aug. 28 after getting reports there appeared to be a bear strapped to the roof.

In fact, the remains of two bears were discovered, said Sgt. Shawn LeMay of the Whistler RCMP.

Police seized the bears and called in conservation officers to investigate.

They found one adult bear had been partially dried, said conservation officer Chris Doyle. The second bear, a cub, appeared to have been road kill.

Doyle said there was no indication the bears had been illegally hunted. But without proper permissions, its still illegal to possess wildlife, he added.

Doyle said there were no signs the bears were to be sold for parts, as the carcasses had already been gutted.

The man told officers the bears were for his personal use.
