West Vancouver man dead in Highway 1 off-ramp crash

Caulfeild off-ramp shut down for hours Saturday night

A West Vancouver man is dead following a single-vehicle crash in Caulfeild Saturday night.

Police closed the eastbound Highway 1 exit to Caulfeild Drive just after 8 p.m. after receiving reports of a crashed pickup truck.

About 200 metres up the off-ramp, they found a 2017 Dodge Ram.

“It veered off the road, hit a tree, and then it was at rest. There was significant damage to the vehicle,” said Const. Nicole Braithwaite, West Vancouver police spokeswoman.

Witnesses and first responders attempted CPR on the driver, a 62-year-old West Vancouver man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

“We commend the actions of witnesses who stayed on scene and attempted CPR,” said Const. Nicole Braithwaite, West Vancouver police spokeswoman, in a press release. “All of us at the West Vancouver police offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased man. Losing someone, especially from within our community is devastating.”

West Vancouver police called in the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, which shut down the exit for several hours to investigate. At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and the road was dry.

“It's inconclusive as to what happened, but early indication may suggest that the man was in medical distress, which led to the accident,” she said.

It will be up to the BC Coroners Service to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or captured it on their dashcam to come forward and speak with police.
