A 72-year-old man was assaulted and robbed during a home invasion Wednesday in the 400block of Raindance Crescent in West Vancouver.
According to the West Vancouver Police Department, the assailant allegedly forced his way into the home at approximately four a.m. when the man and the 70-year-old female homeowner were sleeping.
The homeowners' dog started barking, alerting the residents to the intrusion, according to WVPD spokeswoman Const. Lisa Schmidtke.
"It appears to be an isolated incident," Schmidtke said, adding that the suspect's motivation for choosing that house is unknown.
The suspect is accused of stealing a wooden box filled with jewelry and a wallet filled with cash and credit cards.
The male resident suffered facial injuries from his altercation with the alleged thief, but was not taken to hospital. The female resident was not assaulted.
The suspect is described as a male, five feet 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds. He wore dark clothing, a baseball cap, and a bandana on his face. He spoke English and had a deep voice. He did not use any tools to break into the home, according to Schmidtke.
The WVPD Criminal Investigation Section is handling the investigation with assistance from police canine units, forensic identification personnel and Victim Services.
"We are pooling all our resources," Schmidtke said. Police are asking anyone with information to call the West Vancouver Police Department at 604-925-7300 and refer to WVPD file number 12-603.
