THURSDAY was a busy day for West Vancouver's patrol division as a string of motor vehicle incidents had officers running around town.
The day started with a call to the 2600-block of Ottawa Avenue just before 9 a.m. following a single-vehicle crash of a pickup into a hedge. Officers determined the owner, a 72-year-old man, was working on the truck and may have released the emergency brake when trying to pop the hood. The man had to be taken to Lions Gate Hospital to get a wound on his head stitched up. Damage to the property is estimated at $3,000.
Shortly after 1 p.m., officers responded to a call on the 1900-block of Bellevue Avenue, where someone reported a vehicle spinning circles on the lawn. On the scene, officers found an 87year-old man in the car and his wife standing nearby.
The man was trying to back out of his driveway, lost control of the vehicle and may have accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes, causing the vehicle to spin around the lawn three or four times. No one was injured in the accidental donuts, but damage to the lawn will run about $500. Police are recommending the Superintendent of Motor Vehicle conduct a review of the man's licence.
Only minutes later, another collision at 14th Street and Inglewood Avenue had officers scrambling. In that case, a westbound driver collided with a southbound one before ricocheting into three parked cars. There were no reported injuries, however damages are expected to run $35,000. Police are not looking to issue a violation ticket as there were no independent witnesses to the collision.
