West Vancouver police are looking for answers regarding an alleged assault involving pepper spray that occurred on Tuesday.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 police responded to a call at Ambleside Park near 13th Street concerning a woman who had been pepper sprayed.

The alleged victim told officers that she had parked her vehicle and was preparing to go for a run on the Spirit Trail when another woman approached her with a flashlight and began taking pictures of her vehicle and licence plate.

A confrontation ensued followed by the suspect allegedly pepper spraying the driver and walking away eastbound on the Spirit Trail.

“We don’t have a full explanation of why this begins with the photographs and the licence plate, why somebody felt this was necessary,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman.

The woman was treated on scene by paramedics.

Extensive patrols of the area were conducted following the incident but no suspect was found.

The suspect is described as being an elderly woman, approximately 5-foot-4, who was wearing a black, puffy jacket and walking a dog.

“Due to the time and the lighting conditions we don’t have much additional description from that,” Palmer said.

“Anyone who may have any information or seen someone similar to the suspect description just may be information that’s helpful in terms of locating the individual, getting a fuller explanation of how this confrontation escalated the way that it did.”

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the alleged assault or has information regarding the incident is asked to contact Const. John Hogan at 604-925-7300.
