West Vancouver firefighters were called out to battle fires at two homes Wednesday – one under construction and the other under renovation.
Flames were shooting up from the roof of a home being renovated in the 6000 block of Gleneagles Drive when fire crews arrived on scene around 11 p.m. Wednesday night, said Jeff Bush, assistant fire chief with West Vancouver Fire and Rescue.
No one was home at the time.
Firefighters doused the blaze in the top floor of the two-storey wood frame house from the street.
The top floor of the home was extensively damaged in the fire, which also caused the roof to collapse. The rest of the home sustained heavy water damage, said Bush.
The owners were out of the country at the time when the fire broke out.
Because of structural instability, fire investigators waited until after crews finished mopping up hot spots on Thursday to go into the house. The home has been under renovation for some time, said Bush.
The blaze on Gleneagles was the second house fire for crews on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, at around 2:30 p.m., firefighters were called out to a house under construction in the British Properties, near the intersection of Finch and Marlowe.
Fire broke out in the top floor of the home, which was noticed by workers on the construction site who saw smoke.
Firefighters managed to confine the fire to the upper portion of the top floor, said Capt. Marcia James of West Vancouver Fire and Rescue.
“There will be a lot of repair work that will be required,” said James.
Fire investigators were on scene at both fire sites Thursday.
So far, there’s no indication about what caused the fires, said James.
